Chelsea vs. Blackburn Rovers

Chelsea was brimming with goals and attacking intent. Frank Lampard gave a vintage display. Didier Drogba was a menace all evening. Michael Essien scored a picturebook goal. And Joe Cole enjoyed his first start since 11 January at the head of the midfield diamond, showing some sweet flashes even though he was understandably a little rusty.

Carlo Ancelotti's side could have been ahead after just 30 seconds but Joe Cole headed wide from close range.

The opener came from the unlikeliest of sources when Gael Givet turned a Nicolas Anelka cross into his own goal after squandering a host of chances.

Gael Givet's 20th-minute own goal gave the home side a deserved lead and Rovers had goalkeeper Paul Robinson to thank that there were no further goals before the break.

But then four goals in 16 minutes at the beginning of the second period confirmed the Blues dominance.

Frank Lampard made it 2-0 early on and Michael Essien got in on the act with a thumping 30 yarder which curled in the air and beat Robinson all ends up.

On 59 minutes, Ryan Nelsen upended Drogba to concede a penalty and Lampard duly dispatched the spot-kick.

Drogba slammed once again on 64 minutes, heading home a Michael Ballack corner from six yards out for the fifth goal and preserved the Blues' a clean sheet.

Chelsea could have added a sixth late on but Anelka’s shot was saved by Robinson at the second attempt. This win was Chelsea's biggest ever against Blackburn.
