Last-gasp Sneijder sends Inter top

AFP - 4 November 2009 22:50

Roman Eremenko of FC Dynamo Kiev(R) fights for a ball with Wesley Sneijder FC Inter Milan during their UEFA Champions League, Group F football match in Kiev. Sneijder socred a late goal to give Milan a 2-1 victory.

KIEV (AFP) - Wesley Sneijder struck a dramatic late winner to earn Inter Milan a 2-1 comeback victory over Dynamo Kiev in their Champions League clash at the Lobanovskiy Stadium here on Wednesday.

Kiev led until the 86th minute, when Diego Milito equalised, and with a minute of normal time to play Sneijder converted from close range after home goalkeeper Stanislav Bogush let Sulley Muntari's strike get away from him.

Barcelona's earlier 0-0 draw at Russian champions Rubin Kazan means Inter, who started the day bottom of the group, now have a one-point lead at the top of Group F with two matches to play.

"It was a fantastic performance, with heart, emotion, desire and unity," said Inter coach Jose Mourinho, whose side had gone eight matches without a win in the competition.

"I've done some quick calculations and I think that nine points will be enough (to qualify for the last 16). We have six, we need three more.

"Things would have been much more complicated with a draw or a defeat.

"It gives belief to the team and, I hope, the fans, who will all have to be there for our last match against Rubin Kazan. We must win this match at home."

Andriy Shevchenko's strike mid-way through the first half looked to have earned Kiev a significant victory over Inter and Mourinho, who brought the Ukrainian striker to Chelsea when manager of the Premier League side in 2006.

The Portuguese coach sent on Thiago Motta and Mario Balotelli at half-time as Inter sought an equaliser but it was centre-back Walter Samuel who wasted the first chance to level when he headed wide from Sneijder's free-kick.

Samuel Eto'o spurned an even better opportunity with 25 minutes to go when he headed wide from barely two yards after Samuel's flick-on, before the Argentine defender thumped a diving header against the post.

Inter bombarded the Kiev penalty area, Balotelli placing a shot narrowly wide of the right-hand upright and Eto'o missing with another header but with time running out Milito collected Sneijder's pass before firing past Bogush.

Kiev's defensive work was then undone completely in the 89th minute, Bogush spilling substitute Muntari's effort and Milito squaring for Sneijder to tap home.

Sneijder had come close to giving Inter an early lead when he saw a left-footed effort whistle over the Kiev crossbar in the second minute.

Milos Ninkovic responded with a tame effort that drifted wide as the hosts struggled to get men forward before Eto'o blasted over for Inter after latching onto Milito's headed pass.

Shevchenko had been largely subdued but he sparked into life to put Kiev in front in the 21st minute with a shot from the edge of the penalty area that stunned Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar by dipping beneath the crossbar.

4 minutes to the end of the game Inter could be easily disqualified from playing next round even there are 2 games remaining , almost no chances for this average team which will be probably stunned by Barcelona in the next game . Personally I wish both teams not to qualify , but if there are no surprises in next game Barcelona will have 8 points , Rubin Kazan 8 points and Inter 6 points , 1 point for Rubin against Inter will be enough to see Inter quit at this stage , or if they get luck to qualify they will be kicked by most probably some English or Spanish team ( 5 chances in 8 to meet them ) .

More tribute for Dynamo who started with 6 Ukrainian players , they can proudly say we are from Ukraine comparing to Inter who started with ZERO player from Italy .

Alboi, this is the first game Inter won in the Champion league this year. Big deal! If they are such a beautiful team as you say, why haven't they won a game up to today's? I was hoping they would lose for not having a single Italian player in the starting line up. This is an insult to Italian soccer. I hope Barcelona will kick you know what out of them. Sorry, Giorgio, but I just can't stand Inter for having so many foreigners at the detriment of Italian players.

Hahaha, yes yes, cry moooore!!! Waaahhh!! The truth is that today we won a well deserved game! As an Inter fan, I am happy for today. Nobody knows what the future holds and no one can predict it. The goal of every team in this competition is to win the title. There's no difference between teams that get disqualified now and teams that get disqualified in the final. They all have the same thing in common. They are all losers. Only the winner gets the respect and prestige. So even if Inter gets disqualified in the group stage and Real Madrid gets disqualified in quarter finals, there is no difference between the two. They both lose. I would not care where we get disqualified if I knew that in the end we would lose anyway. But I am happy today that we won because as long as we are winning, there is a CHANCE to grab the trophy and nothing anybody can say can take that away for now.

Tonto,

As regards to your question I have a hint:

It's called INTERNAZIONALE Milano. Take that literally. In any case, there are millions of Italian fans that live in Italy and don't share the same feelings of hostility toward Inter that you do. Besides, let's face it. Inter is winning BECAUSE it doesn't have any Italian players. I don't mean any disrespect by that because I'm sure you know I have great respect and knowledge of the Italian culture and language. But at some point you've got to smell the roses and face the facts. Italy isn't presently producing many great players. Juventus has the best Italian players around and it is not winning the Serie A with them as we can see. Inter, the team that isn't made up of Italians, is winning it. The only Italian player I admire and put up there with the best in the world is Cassano. I wish Inter would have bought him, even at the expense of Sneijder. But Mourinho did not consider him to be an attacking midfielder, but a second striker and we did not need a second striker. I happen to disagree with Mourinho. The other ITALIAN I admire is Balotelli, even though some boorish people in Italy still don't consider him Italian just because his skin is black even though he was BORN in the city of Palermo and entrusted to Italian parents who adopted him at the age of 3. And if he continues to play like he did today, he should start every game and leave Eto'o to warm the bench. And maybe Lippi can take off his old, unrefined glasses and not look at Balotelli's color. He would call up Santon, who doesn't even play as much as Balotelli and disregard Mario?

Look, the bottom line is that Inter is a club and Inter wants to win. And if winning means that it has to choose foreign players over Italian ones based on ABILITY and not NATIONALITY, then so be it! Millions of Italian and non-Italian Inter fans in Italy and all over the world don't seem to mind that. Some do. Oh well, tough luck! To these people I ask that they remember that if it weren't for Inter, some of the greatest players brought to Italian football in its history would have gone somewhere else. This includes presently players like Eto'o, Maicon, Julio Cesar and it has included in the past players like Ibrahimovic, Ronaldo, Vieira, and Crespo, just to mention a few of the giants that have passed through Inter's doors. Italian football has been taken to new heights BECAUSE of Inter. And at some point, we've got to wake up, face reality, and give credit where it's due.

Fred,

I don't mind if you say that you hate Inter; we all have our preferences about these things.

I dindn't watch the Inter-Dynano game last night, as I was watching Arsenal and prior to that I watched the Rubin Kazan-Barca game. In spite of Barca's far greater possession, Rubin Kazan had 3 clear scoring chances and they deserved to win last night.

And it also showed that, when it comes to big important CL matches, Ibra is useless and Inter were right in getting rid of him. And at the same time Sneijder was a very good buy from Real; Sneijder is undoubtedly a great player.

Only 2 games left in the group stages and things are starting to look a little shaky for some clubs. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the big names in European football shouldn't make it to the next round.

Yes, yes, yes, so happy Inter won this game, it made my day more happier and richer. I won nearly 2,000 profit on this match ;D

Aiboi, well said. I totally agree with you and hope your comment can give this Faggy (Tonto) a little lesson. Faggy needs to be "TEACHED" just like Ibrahimovic instead of taught ;D

Fag (Tonto), you said you can't stand Inter for having so many foreigners at the detriment of Italian players. I can sense the "JEALOUSY" of you about Inter success story. Inter has been doing very well so far, not like your "LOUSY" AC MILAN (Annoying Cunt of Milano). Can't even beat a weaker team like Zurich! Luckily, Real Madrid shows some sympathy about your team and "DONATED" some points to your LOUSY ANNOYING CUNT TEAM!

Fag (Tonto), my advice to you is "JUST GET OVER IT"!

Since you are so in love with your country, Italy then why settle down in States? Why not go back to where you belong ???? What a PATHETIC OLD MAN!

Guys, it is great to see most of the bloggers here post their colourful comments...

Inter is the best team in Italy thanks to their foreign players. Unfortunately, there is not any "good enough" Italian players that can play for Inter, nowadays. (apart from Nesta, Buffon and Pirlo, and they won't leave their clubs). So, Mourinho has little option to bring Italian players to his team.

I believed Inter and Barcelona will meet in the final, now Inter's and Barcelona's performances yesterday were proved my beleif.

Soccerwinner,

take it easy man. I am going to Roma tomorrow. I will see Lazio-Milan game. I will probably cheer for Lazio (as I think I'll get home team ticket) for you against your most hated club "Annoying C.." of Milan. I don't know what happened between you and Tonto, but still I think your personal attack on him is totally uncalled for. I also noticed that he is very nice to you recently. We don't want to lose the "old man" here, in this blog. please be nice to him, man. you won't lose anything.

Alboi, nice to see back with your "distinctive" comments.

Soccerwinner, if during the course of a debate you have to resort to tell your opponent to go back to where he came from, it means you have no valid arguments to prove your point. The vulgar tone of your comment also proves that you have no valid argument. Therefore, you lost this debate. Next topic, please!

Alboi, if you have to write a thousand words to say nothing, just write a few of them for the same result. AC Milan has probably had more foreign players than Inter ever had but they have never fielded a squad of 11 foreigners. I don’t buy your bit of “Internazionale.” It’s a myth!

Avi , I don't think Inter are interested to sign Italian players , they don't invest money for it , that's the only reason they don't have them . I am not Italian or defend Italian players but I wish the same for all clubs .Greek , Italian , French , English , Turkish or Spanish clubs should have a certain number of local players , a minimum respect for the area where they belong to .

Fiorentina , Milan , Juventus together fielded 22 Italian players , Spanish clubs 21 and French clubs 21 local players , when they meet I can call it French side against Italian side but Inter with Arsenal went too far I think . 5 + 6 rule can send them to a lower division !

5 November 2009 15:09

Holly,

Still I do not understand why you think all teams should put a limit for foreign players? You suggest 6 or 5. Why 5 or 6, not 3, 4 or 5?

Nowadays, almost all national teams have naturalised players. Bearing in mind, these teams are not national teams.

Another issue, you know, some players hold more than 1 nationalities. Do you think they are also included the restiriction number?

See some facts for last champions league finals, the number of national players that finalis teams fielded;

2000 Real 7, Valencia 6

2001 Bayern 4, Valencia 4

2002 Real 6, Leverkusen 7

2003 Juventus 6, Milan 6 (I was there, at the most boring final)

2004 Porto 9, Monaco 6

2005 Liverpool 2, Milan 4

2006 Barcelona 4, Arsenal 2

2007 Milan 7, Liverpool 3

2008 Man Utd 6, Chelsea 4

2009 Barcelona 6, Man Utd 3

as you can see most of the fielded players are foreigners.

as you know the world is becoming more globalised, more players swoping their nationalities etc.

I think instead of putting a limit for foreigners, everyt team should put more players in their squad from their youth academies, without separating them because of their nationalities....

Anyway, I am flying Roma tomorrow, then Spain. You said we can find ticket for the game Spain against Argentina, right?

hollyice

5 November 2009 17:42

Avi , you can check it by yourself here for example http://www.madrid-football-tickets.com/en/eur/tickets/14904/spain_vs_argentina

Over than 2 years now I have not been to Vicente Calderón stadium as I promissed it to myself after I picked a fight with a relative and I told him I am a chick if I put my feet there anymore and he said the same about Bernabéu , I am afraid I will miss this game because of such silly thing especially I have Argentinian collegues who wont forgive me that .

Back to Inter now , you know a club is a symbol also and Inter have nothing to do with Italy except that stadium they don't even own !

alboi

5 November 2009 18:03

Holly,

Let Inter be. You are not Italian. You have nothing to do with Italy. There is no reason why you should hate a team that doesn't field Italian players. It just doesn't make sense.

When FIFA makes rules to limit the number of foreign players, you can be sure Inter will comply. It has never cheated in the past like some other teams. So far there are no rules for this sort of thing.

One rule I really would like to see that is even more important than your arbitrary 6+5 that you came up with is the amount of money a team can spend to buy and pay a player. I think that if FIFA put a limit to that a lot would change for many teams and it would level the playing field. Some teams may even realize that players do just come to them for money these preposterously rich teams are giving them.

hollyice

5 November 2009 18:15

I used to critisize Liverpool for fielding more Spaniards than English players , it doesn't mean if I am Spaniard I will like it if a Japanese club field 11 Spaniards . No way , I am not talking in behalf of Italy or Italian players but in general , it doesn't make sense if an Albanian team field 11 Brazilians and tell me then this is Albanian football !!!! Of course Inter can field 11 players if the rules let them to , those rules permit for Madrid , Barcelona , Milan , Zürich and all other clubs to do it also but NO they chose a minimum of respect at least by fielding 4, 5 ,6 national ones ! Inter are the only pervert ones who can do such silly thing , they think it's a great thing what they are doing but only blind people will follow them !

alboi

5 November 2009 23:53

What a joke. Would it be ok for you if Inter started 3 or 4 Italian players? Would that make it Italian football? Of course not!

alboi

6 November 2009 01:07

They would still have 7-8 International footballers. Also, if an Italian team started 4 Italians and 5 Brazilians would that make it Italian football? No. There is NO SUCH THING as Italian football. You made that up. The only thing you can talk about Italian football is during the world cup when ALL players AND the coach are Italian. Also, you can talk about ITALIAN STYLE OF PLAY which tends to be more defensive and more conservative, a little more physical and also played in the air more than other leagues. If you use that definition, Inter DOES fit that category of Italian style of play. In that sense, IT IS an Italian team because it plays like other Italian teams.

Lol, this is so stupid. Millions of Italian fans who have made Inter the SECOND most popular team in Italy after Juventus don't care about its national player makeup because they can tell the difference between CLUB football and NATIONAL football. And I have a feeling that after this scudetto win we will win over some of the Milan fans because we will surpass Milan in the amount of titles in Italy (18 vs 17). We will expand our fan base even more. http://www.goal.com/en/news/723/serie-a/2008/12/17/1015961/juventus-still-the-most-supported-team-in-italy

When Inter sees they are losing money because they don't field Italian players, trust me, they will change... But Italians and the rest of Inter fans around the world don't care about that. But here we have ONE Spaniard who's not even an Inter fan talk loud BS as if it really matters to Inter.

The other lie you told was "Inter are not interested to sign Italian players , they don't invest money for it". Let me tell you that Inter has one of the best youth systems in Italy. It HAS produced great ITALIAN youth as we can see with Santon and Balotelli. Only Juventus has produced one more: Giovinco, De Ceglie, and Marchisio, but I don't think any of them are better than Santon or Balotelli. Milan hasn't even produced ONE...or if you consider Abate good enough, then I guess it has produced 1. Does that mean Milan doesn't invest in Italian players? No... but if we use your criteria it does. So keep your lies and your bs to yourself about Inter not being Interested in Italian players. Out of the 30 players in Inter's squad, 9 are Italian NATIONALS on the team. But they don't enter the pitch because they are NOT good enough for Inter. They may be good for Lazio or Genoa but not Inter. They are either too old or too young. The majority of them are too young which shows Inter cares about its Italian players. http://www.soccerway.com/teams/italy/fc-internazionale-milano/

I've told you long ago that your hate for Inter doesn't make sense as even when looking at these facts which I posted for you. But we all know that your hate for Inter started when I said some disagreeable things about Real Madrid. Then you changed your views about Inter just like an angry child does. But surely, you don't expect me to care about the opinions of one Spanish non-Inter fan when more than 10 million Inter fans in Italy and around the world love the team for the football it plays, NOT for the nationality of the players. It says a lot about your thinking and your views when you still use nationality as a reason to discredit a football club. But anyways, enough wasting time here. I have midterms to worry about. Ciao!

PS. Next time you pull stuff out of your ass, try to support it with actual FACTS please.

hollyice

6 November 2009 07:21

Alboi , I dont know which facts you are talking about but what I expressed here is not my hate , read again my posts , it's my opinion . Inter would look better if they have around 5 players from the country they represent .

UEFA rules say 2 clubs from the same country can't meet in the next knock out stage , I wonder what makes sense for this rule if they mention COUNTRY when Inter starts with not single player from that country . Some countries in this world always had the best leagues , the best players , the best football , no one can deny Italy is one of them whether someone hates Italy or not . So how come an Italian club can't start even with 1 Italian player ? How can you call Inter as a decent Italian club?

Please critisize more my club , I do love it if you think that makes me angry , you are wrong . But the problem is you Alboi , you can't stand critics , you don't have those facts you are talking about to critisize my club .What you have said here is only jealousy ,like talking about money which can't make me angry . You could make me angry if you tell me that Madrid will never reach the level of Inter with all the trophies that Inter won , thanks Lord you can't , positive FACTS are in my side , surrender to Milan if you want to compare yourself to Madrid ;) .

Tontodonati

6 November 2009 12:06

Alboi, your 10 million fans in Italy and around the world love Inter because they are winning rather than for their style of play. When Inter start losing, those phoney fans will cheer for another winning team and the Italians will start complaining about Inter not fielding native players. But we’re discussing ideology rather than facts or statistics which can be manipulated to support any points we want to make. I think Hollyice gave you a good example of an ideological thought when he said that if Albania buy 11 Brazilians, can we talk about an Albanian team?

Inter claim to be Internazionale but if you look at the players, they are, for the greater part, from Argentina and Brazil. Are those two nations the only ones who can play soccer? What about the English, the Germans, the Spaniards, the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French and the Italians?

You keep repeating that Italians are not good enough to play for Inter, but you will have a hard time convincing me that J. Zanetti is better than Chiellini or that Cambiasso and Mountari are better than De Rossi and Pirlo. What about a comparison between Sneijder and Gilardino without mentioning Di Natale and Cassano? There are enough good Italian players to replace Inter foreign line up if Inter want to. At the moment Inter is doing well in Italy but keep in mind that internationally they have not fared well in the last 5 years. That blows away your theory that Inter has the best players in the world.

And yes! Inter is doing a good job in investing in Italian youth talent, but if they are not good enough to play why don’t they sell them?

In conclusion, I can only say that Inter is not an Italian team whether they play the Italian style or not.

Gentlemen, I have found a cheap ($39 per year) but reliable soccer channel: ESPN 360. I've been watching all the WC U17 and a few games from the USA, Italian, Spanish and German top leagues including Real Madrid, Juventus, Milan, Inter and Bayern Munich. From now on I should be more informed about what is really happening in Europe.

6 November 2009 14:34

Here we pay a bit more than 60 e per month but we don't miss any good game ...

I wonder where Alboi watches his games , in justin.tv maybe ;) ..and PaoloRossi too , he is gone ? Back to European football .

The best solution is the 6+5 rule which has been accepted by FIFA last year . The objective of this rule was to restore the national identity of football clubs , but it violates the EU labour policy .

Here is a small contradiction with EU policy also , if I create a society and I want to recruit some 20 workers from Asia or Africa it will be quite impossible to get them as they will ask me to get local workers (not sure about the rules) , anyways they will want me to use unemployed local people from local employment agencies . When it's about football , it violates EU policy? Anyway , this year for the first time it was declared that the 6+5 rule can be implemented in line with European Community law , so we will see in the future where clubs like Inter and Arsenal will find themselves !
